Silvan Poberaj, the US Olympic Team coach, has developed a standardized testing course that anyone can hang on flat water and a set of tests for measuring your paddling strengths and weaknesses.

Here are some benchmarks for aspiring slalom paddlers

These tests will help you to:

  • Specifically evaluate your:
    • - Speed
    • - Anaerobic Lactic Capacity
    • - Aerobic Capacity
    • - Stroke and Turning Technique
    • - Technique Stability
    • - Pacing
  • Evaluate your training program over time
  • Motivate and educate yourself about the training process

We have built a tool that enables you to track your test scores over time and compare your results with the rest of the paddling community.

Steps to Get Started

Test_course_lowres
  1. Setup a testing course. It's easy - only two gates on a single wire.
  2. Perform the tests described HERE. You can have a coach or teammate time you or, as we prefer, video the testing and then time the tests from the video. Or you can send a link to the video to me (geosugar dot com at gmail dot com) and I will time it and post your results for you. More on timing HERE
  3. You will need a stopwatch that can take splits and someone to record them.
  4. Log in and enter your results
  5. Rinse, wash and repeat. We like to repeat the tests monthly.

Timing Options

  1. Time and record all of your splits. Enter them and this web site will compute your times, distances and speeds for you.
  2. Check out the race manager here. It is setup for timing paddletools.com members performing these tests. Select your name from the start list, select 'Speed Test' or 'Distance Test' and then click start to begin timing your runs. Once you have timed your tests, you can quickly import the results under the 'Your Test Results' menu.
  3. Create a video of your test runs and post it to youtube or your favorite video hosting site. Send a link to the video to me (geosugar dot com at gmail dot com) and I will time it and post your results for you. No five minute endurance tests, please.
